I’m fed up. What’s with the general upset over YouTube’s inability to turn a profit? Either everyone’s obsessed with instant ROI or people are just jealous of YouTube’s sell to Google.
Here’s the deal: companies - strong, successful organizations with long term viability - take time to build and profit. Don’t credit Google for making a dumb purchase just yet.
In other industries, long term ROI is more often a fact of life. While everyone in the valley rides the wave and overvalues a company like Facebook, Google is treating YouTube like a sandbox, toying with different strategies to ultimately make YouTube profitable - and that’s okay.
And remember the playland at McDonald’s? Google understands the notion of brand loyalty, and I can only imagine how much web video the pre-high school demo is consuming today. The result is a legion of viewers who don’t have purchasing power now, but will eventually be that coveted 18 to 34 demo.
The bottom line is that true monetization takes patience - I don’t know YouTube’s long term strategy, but it’s clear to me that they’re ignoring the high tides in favor of more consistent, favorable waters. At a time when everyone is frantically groping for a “monetization strategy”, YouTube is building out the most robust - albeit aesthetically unappealing - video destination site. Annotations is just the latest in a long line of awesome tools that no doubt increase community engagement and time spent on site (Hulu begins and ends with text commenting).
YouTube has a loyal (or at least consistent) audience, awesome tools, and the foresight to take it slow. You can make money overnight, but you can also make money over time.

Well I’ll be damned. I think we all believed that the Lakers had more fight in them. Or at least a little more swagger. Were they THAT bad or were the Celtics just that good?? This IS the same Celtics team that let the Hawks push them to a game 7 in the first round of the playoffs. Of course it’s also the same Celtics team that had the best record in the NBA this year. Go figure.
Now, I despise the Red Sox and Patriots equally….generally I have no use for the Celtics either. But I have mixed emotions about this victory. I gotta say it was nice to see Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and KG officially get their crowns. Nice for Doc too. And admittedly there WAS some pleasure involved in watching Kobe take one between the eyes. –Don’t get me started.

What a disappointing series overall though, huh? So much for all the hype and history.

China rising

Last night I watched FRONTLINE: Young & Restless in China. It was a little scary, in a wonderful way. China is becoming America. There are a ton of entrepreneurs, angsty teenagers, and even public interest lawyers suing the government. There’s modern building technology and Oracle clones (by which I mean massive software concerns that span multiple buildings and double in size every six months). There are people who quit their cushy jobs at those Oracle clones to start their own businesses, because that’s what they always wanted to do.
I used to argue that China and its ilk (India, Russia, et cetera) weren’t really a threat to us for another fifty years because they had yet to develop a culture of entrepreneurship and individual achievement. This Frontline program proves me wrong. Not only is there a culture of entrepreneurship in China that rivals that of the United States, there’s also an incredible respect for the rights and achievements of the individual.
This isn’t just happening in China. This is happening throughout the world. China, though, may be leading the pack here. They’re definitely managing the transition better than India.
This is Bill Clinton’s real legacy. By opening up trade with China and the rest of the world he gave them the tools they needed to pick themselves up by their bootstraps. This will hurt us in the short-term (hell, it’s hurt us a lot already) but in the long term this is only good. A global economy of peers is much superior in the long-term to an empire with colonial subjects.

Executioners struggled for 35 minutes to find a vein before Curtis Osborne died by lethal injection Wednesday for a 1990 Spalding County double murder.
Osborne, 37, was pronounced dead at 9:05 p.m., 14 minutes after his executioners injected the first of three fatal drugs. He was the second man Georgia has executed in a month. He also was the fourth person in the country to die by lethal injection since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the method was constitutional.

Even after a 55-minute delay while the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed his final appeal, the execution that was to have occurred at 7 p.m. was delayed even longer while prison medical staff tried to find acceptable veins in both arms.
Osborne said nothing while the I.V.s were inserted.
And once the witnesses were in place, Osborne shook his head “no” when Warden Hilton Hall asked if he had any final words. He nodded “yes,” however, when a prayer was offered.
The prison chaplain prayed that God would find “favor” with Osborne. The inmate could be seen moving his lips also in prayer as the minister offered his words.
There was one last series of appeals Wednesday. The Parole Board denied his request for mercy on Monday.
Osborne was executed for shooting Arthur Jones and Linda Lisa Seaborne on Aug. 7, 1990. Osborne allegedly killed Jones because Osborne didn’t want to give him the $400 he got for selling Jones’ motorcycle. Seaborne was killed because she was there.
Jones’ and Seaborne’s relatives waited for news that the execution was over while about 25 protesters were outside.
As his hour of death approached, death-penalty opponents gathered at on the edge of the property of the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison near Jackson, about a mile from the death chamber, and at locations in seven other cities. They held signs and sang in protest.
“The fact that there was a significant delay proves there is still a problem with lethal injection,” Sara Tontonchi, one of the protesters, said after Osborne was dead.
Osborne stared at the ceiling as the first of the drugs â€” sodium pentathol â€” flowed. He looked at the prison nurse at his side, licked his lips and closed his eyes. A few minutes later he yawned, and then he didn’t move again.
Two doctors pronounced him dead after monitors indicated his heart had stopped.
On his last day, Osborne visited several hours with 14 visitors, five at a time, until mid-afternoon. Once his vistitation was over, Osborne was given his final physical. He returned to a cell just yards from the death chamber around 4. He declined his final meal â€” cheeseburger, potatoes, slaw and a cookie â€” or to make a recorded last statement or to have a mild sedative offered an hour before the scheduled 7 p.m. execution.
Then he waited for his execution.
Osborne’s lawyers tried to save him by arguing he had an inadequate defense, especially when it came time to argue to the jury that it sound sentence him to life in prison instead of death. Osborne’s lawyers now say the late Johnny Mostiler, the white public defender in Spalding County at the time, had used a racial slur when he referred to Osborne, an African-American, and said his client should be executed. They also said Mostiler did not ask for money to hire an expert who could have told the jury of Osborne’s mental illness, drug use and his family’s dysfunctional history.
